New Entrant Policy

Purpose

To ensure all new entrant children enjoy a smooth and happy transition to school.

Guidelines
  • All new entrants will receive 3 transition to school visits:

  • 9.15 – 10.15am first visit
    9.15 – 10.45am second visit
    9.15 – 11.30am third visit
    Parents will be notified by letter of these visits and which class their child will be in.
  • Every parent will be invited by letter to a ‘Transition to School’ meeting. These will be held 3 times a year.
  • Enrolment procedures are carried out by the Principal. Parents will receive a prospectus. Parents are encouraged to enroll their child as soon as they have made the school decision.
  • Orientation visits are welcomed
  • The Assistant Principal will consider needs of each child, pre-school information and school organisation before placing the child.
  • All children will complete a New Entrant Assessment check at one month. All parents/caregivers will be invited to an interview at 6 weeks.
  • Children will finish school at 2pm for the first 3 weeks.
  • Communication and liaison with Kindergartens and Early Childhood Centres is vital. The Assistant Principal will visit, phone and be involved in parent education regularly to ensure a positive relationship is maintained.
  • All early childhood centres will have the information regarding enrolment and the school prospectus.

Assessment & Evaluation

Purpose
Assessment and evaluation assist the teacher and learner to set goals for subsequent learning

Requirement
National Administration Guidelines No 1 – 11 and National Education Goals No 6

Objectives

  1. Information will be collected and recorded in a variety of ways, as outlined in the Hampden Street Assessment Folder and following discussions with the Senior Management.
  2. Information will be clear, concise and relevant to learning. All statements will be able to be substantiated by class teachers.
  3. Data will be analysed and interpreted and become the basis of future planning and teaching giving priority to literacy and numeracy.
  4. Methods of assessment will be non-threatening to the child and meaningful feedback/feedforward should be given
  5. Records will be readily available for discussion with other teachers and parents/caregivers
  6. Reporting to parents/caregivers will follow the guidelines outlined in the Reporting to Parents Policy.
  7. All children will have a Learning Log which will record progress throughout the year. Entries should have written feedback/feedforward.
  8. All children will have an Evaluation Clearfile Profile updated regularly by the class teacher as set out in the Assessment Folder.
  9. Planning is carried out against curriculum Objectives and evaluated class wide accordingly.
  10. School wide assessment is based on Essential Skills
  11. Assessment information will be used to identify children not achieving, at risk, with special needs and/or abilities.
  12. Information will be analysed in class and year groups. Year4 – 6 class will use standardised tests of AsTTle – Reading, Maths and PAT, Listening
Pupil Placement

Purpose
The placement of pupils into a class requires careful consideration of the intellectual, social and emotional development of each individual child.

Objectives

Our school's intention is to implement child-centred developmental learning. All class groups will be of mixed ability and may be a composite nature.
